Why choose a raw material that is free from petrol-based plastic, natural, and SUSTAINABLE?
TABLE & NATURE was born from a desire to create tableware without petrol-based plastic in order to replace traditional leisure tableware, which is mostly made of this type of plastic. Plastic is a material derived from petrol. It is therefore polluting and harmful to humans and the environment. Additionally, some forms of plastic are not recyclable.
Petrol-based plastic contains micro particles that can migrate from the product to the food we consume. It’s a pollutant, and having petrol-based plastic in our bodies can have long-term negative effects. So, we thought it was really important to create tableware that’s responsible and respectful of both people and our planet.
A few numbers to get a sense of the main environmental benefits of this material:
- 70% less energy consumption for its production
- 80% less greenhouse gas
- 100% plant- and mineral-based (renewable resources)
- 0% petrol
What biomaterial do we use and how have we harnessed it?
To meet the need for 100% natural tableware, 0% petrol-based plastic, 0% BPA, TABLE & NATURE spent a long time searching for the right material. It took two years to identify a suitable base material, find a supplier not too far away, master the material, and equip it with the characteristics that
we were aiming to achieve… to experiment, fail, start over, test, refine…
With a well-completed set of specifications, the material that proved ideal for our needs is PLA (Polylactic Acid). While its name may sound intimidating, PLA is indeed a biopolymer. This biopolymer is obtained through the fermentation of plants (corn starch, for example, which is an agricultural byproduct of corn production) and the addition of minerals (chalk for us).
This material provides us with everything we needed to develop our products. It is a human- and planet-friendly biomaterial—responsible, sustainable, lightweight, petrol-free, safe for food use, microwave- and dishwasher-safe, and biodegradable (in an industrial environment).
